Is a leading technology region in Europe. Located in the Southeast Netherlands, with Eindhoven at its heart, this top technology region of world standing creates solutions for the societal challenges of tomorrow
Brainport Development is the economic development agency for the region, and works to strengthen it with various partners. Brainport Development sets the regional economic strategy, develops and realizes regional and international projects, offers business advice, funding and business premises and promotes Brainport both at home and abroad.
The Brainport region has experienced a considerable transformation over the last 20 years. From a region that faced declining industrial growth and a rise in unemployment rates, it has transformed itself into an international high tech hotspot in a global network, with innovative companies and research institutions. More than a place on the map, Brainport is a philosophy, a mind-set – an innovative, smart way of doing things. High tech knowledge goes hand-in-hand with design, entrepreneurship and the highest-quality manufacturing.
This transition was challenging, but a clear course was set and then followed. The philosophy behind it began with an informal, but close working group of stakeholders in local government, businesses and knowledge & educational institutions, based on the ‘Triple Helix’. This concept of university-industry-government relationships (initiated in the 1990s by Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff) interprets the shift from a dominating industry-government dyad in the Industrial Society, to a growing triadic relationship between university-industry-government in the Knowledge Society.
This informal coalition was made official in 2005 with the set-up of the Brainport Foundation. Its Board is a reflection of the Triple Helix with equal representation from companies, knowledge and educational institutions and government from the Brainport region. The Brainport Foundation regional partners share their vision for the future of the region. The board for the economic development of the Brainport region has a strategic, coordinating and directing role and members of the Foundation form the basis for the regional economic governance of the region. The board members are both stakeholders for their constituencies but also working for the interests of the Brainport region as a whole.
The Brainport Foundation achieved its goals through coordinating and directing regional strategy and through setting up its own think tank - Brainport Development, which works to develop and strengthen the Brainport top technology region and spearhead its goals.
