The Southeast Netherlands is the third export region of the Netherlands with regard to food production and processing. For Brainport, the added value of the food sector lies mostly in the fact that this sector has much ground in common with technology areas such as high tech systems and lifetec. Besides large food producers like Campina, Bavaria, Nutreco, and DSM, there are also hundreds of SMEs active in food production and processing. The foods they produce range from confectionery, meat, dairy products, beer, and vegetables to ingredients and 'powders' for the food industry.

Two examples of innovative food producers in Brainport are Ariza and Fishion Aquaculture:

Ariza
Organic fruit and vegetable business Ariza excels in sustainability. This trailblazer in the organic fruit concentrates market processes more than 60,000 tonnes of organic fruits and vegetables annually and delivers worldwide. Ariza has its own plantations and stands for total supply chain management, monitoring by independent authorities, and a high-quality security system. Profits are invested in people and product development. The company keeps surprising its clients by continually launching new product ideas. Ariza strengthens the organic sector through its participation in the state committee against fraud in organic cultivation and its sponsorship of the International Federation of Organic Agricultural Movements, which supports organic agriculture and certification organisations worldwide.

Fishion Aquaculture
In collaboration with Wageningen University, Anova SeaFood and Fishion Aquafarming have developed the ‘Claresse’: the most sustainable fish of the Netherlands and a unique product in the fishing industry. The farmed fish offers a good alternative for overfished species and is hatched and bred in a fully secured, highly animal-friendly and ecologically sound chain. The product is very interesting for cattle farmers who intend to switch over to fish farming. The Claresse is now sold in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Organisations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and Stichting de Noordzee (The North Sea Foundation) are very pleased with the sustainable, farmed fish.
