Student life in the Brainport Eindhoven region
In the Netherlands it is not that common to have accommodation facilities for students on campus. Normally, students live all around the city in so-called student houses with around 4 to 15 other students. Therefore, most of the student life happens off-campus which contributes to the 'student culture' in the cities.
Many students are part of a student or study association. These associations focus on academic activities, sports and/or recreation and are run by students themselves through a board and several committees. Some are allied to the related educational institution while others are private and have already existed for many years. A few associations are internationally oriented and have English as their common language. Three of the larger international student associations are AIESEC, AEGEE and the Erasmus Student Network (ESN).
Apart from the associations, students meet in pubs and bars (Tuesdays and Thursdays are typical student nights), restaurants, university libraries, and other (cultural) meeting places around the city centre. As a result, students are really part of the local city life.
